Swallow, Swift and Martins - The Swallow

First seen on Wednesday 24th June 2020 at Holy Island

Swallows can be seen virtually anywhere on the Island. You may well encounter them as soon as you arrive as they frequent the car park and roads into the village, often perching on the overhead wires. The two below were perched on a fence on the Rocket Field. The one with the pale face is a young one.


 

Swallows can be seen flying low and fast over the grass, catching insects (as in the photos below). Swallows are easily distinguished from Martins as they have long tail streamers - although as you can see, the young ones take a while to grow theirs.
