Ducks, Grebes and Coots - The Teal

First seen on Monday 18th November 2019 at Holy Island

The Teal is a winter visitor to the UK. The male Teal is a colourful duck, having a grey body, with a green panel on its brown head. The female is quite plain like many female ducks (good camouflage for nesting). Both have a green patch in the wing, which can be dazzling when it catches the sun (you can see this in the second photo). The Teal is one of the smallest ducks found in the UK, only 34-38cm in length. These teal were in a large flock on the Rocket Field, on the way to the castle.
