Tits, Nuthatches and Tree Creepers - The Treecreeper

First seen on Monday 26th October 2020 at Holy Island

Treecreepers favour trees with a rough bark and can be found almost anywhere on most National Trust properties where there are suitable trees. They start at the base of the trunk and work their way up the tree looking for food under the bark. They use their long curved beak to search in the cracks. They work their way round and round the trunk, so will disappear from view for a time. If you see a treecreeper, they will often be in a pose similar these (upside-down). Look at the size of those claws, for gripping onto the bark. Of course on Holy Island, there are not so many large trees that you would normally find Treecreepers on, so they are nowhere near as common here as on the mainland, so this one is quite a rarity. It was found on the avenue of hedgerow trees along the Straight Lonnen.
