Butterflies - The Wall Brown

First seen on Wednesday 29th July 2020 at Holy Island

The Wall Brown is more often known simply as a Wall butterfly. Although widely distributed, it is more often found in coastal areas. it is by far the prettiest of the brown butterflies, with its intricate patterns of patches and spots. It is also quite bright in flight, so easy to spot. They fly in June-July, but can have a second brood in Aug-Sept. The females are lighter and larger than the male, but the males (this is one) have a broad dark band across the forewing. This one was found on The Heugh, but I've also seen one at the entrance to the Castle.
