Thrushes and Chats - The Wheatear

First seen on Thursday 22nd April 2021 at Holy Island

A Summer visitor, arriving in the spring, these birds are found on rugged ground, and on hills. They can often be seen on rocky outcrops and paths. They have very distinctive plumage, greys and browns, with a wide dark stripe through the eye (black in males) topped with white. In flight, they can be recognised by their white rump and black 'T" on the tail. There were two in the castle grounds (near the old lime kilns) - very distant unfortunately.

The two below are juveniles or females, and they were found on one of Holy Island's many lovely stone walls.
