Ducks, Grebes and Coots - The Black-necked Grebe

First seen on Wednesday 19th August 2020 at Druridge Pools

The Black-necked Grebe is quite a rare bird to see in the UK, and this one was on Druridge Pools for only one day. It is in winter plumage unfortunately. Its summer plumage is much more spectacular - very dark (mostly black) with a golden fan behind its bright red eyes. they are larger than the Little Grebe, which you can see by comparison to the tufted duck in the second photo.


 

In April 2022 another one visited Druridge (it could be the same one of course), again only for one day. However, this one was in full summer plumage, looking quite spectacular...
