Gulls - The Little Gull

First seen on Sunday 26th July 2020 at Druridge Pools

The Little Gull, as the name suggests is much smaller than the normal gulls seen in the UK. not so obvious when it is on water or land as in these photos, but when it is in the air feeding it is very acrobatic, not unlike a tern, but it tends to feed while dipping its beak in the water rather than diving. in the summer they have deep black heads and black beak, but these are losing their summer plumage now.

The photo below shows how small the Little Gull is compared to the Black-headed Gull walking behind...

The photo below shows a distant Little Gull walking on water - it is actually flying/gliding, the water is deep. It is foraging for food. This behaviour is similar to that of petrels.
