Finches and Buntings - The Tree Sparrow

First seen on Tuesday 20th October 2020 at Druridge Pools

There are two types of sparrow normally seen in the UK. By far the most common is the House Sparrow, found in many people's back gardens. The Tree Sparrow is far more difficult to see, although in the north-east they are quite widespread. There are a number of ways to tell the two apart, but the head is the most obvious. Male House sparrows have a grey top to their brown head and tree sparrows have an all-over chocolate brown top to their head. Tree Sparrows also have black cheek spots. Interestingly, whereas male and female House Sparrows are quite different, both sexes are the same with Tree Sparrows.

At Druridge, Tree Sparrows can be seen in the hedgerow that runs all along the road/car park. They are often in small bushes with other finches, such as reed buntings.
