Larks, Pipits and Wagtails - The Yellow Wagtail

First seen on Tuesday 20th April 2021 at Druridge Pools

The Yellow Wagtail is the only UK wagtail that lives up to its name, and is truly yellow. Having said that, these are both males, females are paler a more grey, and juveniles are even more pale and grey! There are many races of Yellow Wagtail, the most common found in the UK is the Channel Wagtail which is a hybrid (also found at Druridge). Yellow Wagtails arrive in the spring and they are ground feeders, looking for insects, usually near livestock (horses in this case). They have long spindly black legs.
