Ducks, Grebes and Coots - The Red-necked Grebe

First seen on Tuesday 14th February 2017 at Open Spaces

The Red-necked Grebe is a rare autumn/winter visitor in the UK, from Western Europe. In appearance they are like a very small version of the Great Crested Grebe, having a much longer bill than our native Little Grebe. Quite drab in winter plumage, they are much more identifiable in summer plumage, with rusty brown neck, black cap on a white face, and a bright yellow patch at the base of their bill. They are usually seen on the coast, but this one was found inland on a pond in Northumberland.
