Butterflies - The Chalk Hill Blue

The Chalk Hill Blue is an aptly named butterfly, as it is blue and lives on chalk grasslands (but then so do many other blue butterflies). It is quite a large butterfly, much larger than the common blue. Its wing markings are quite distinctive, having black spots on the trailing edge. Like the Common Blue, females are brown and much less conspicuous. They fly quite late in the year, around August. They can only be found in Southern England.


 

The photo below shows a female Chalk Hill Blue, which is a deep brown colour. You can see the characteristic striping around the wing edges.
