There are around eight moths that have a similar appearance of dark wings with red spots. The two most common have either six or five spots on each wing, so are easy to distinguish. However, the five spot family has two variations. This is simply called the Five-spot Burnet Moth and is the much less common of the two. Although it has five distinct spots, the centre two are usually joined together Its wings are also less pointed the the similar Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet Moth. These Moths have a very rapid wing beat, hovering over the meadows, and are quite easy to spot.
