Butterflies - The Small Blue

First seen on Tuesday 13th June 2017 at Rodborough Common

The Small Blue butterfly only half lives up to its name. It is most definitely small, with a wingspan of little over 2cm it is quite tiny and difficult to see. However, its not really blue. Both sexes are brown, but the male has a scattering of blue scales which you can just se in these photos. The underwing is very much like a Holly Blue butterfly, with no hint of orange as in most of the other blue butterflies. They fly from May to June with a possible second brood in August. They are however quiet scarce and not easy to find. They do like kidney vetch (shown here) which is where they lay their eggs.
