Beetles - The Thistle Leaf-miner Beetle

First seen on Monday 16th August 2021 at Wallington

The Thistle Leaf-miner Beetle is member of the large family of leaf beetles, but within the leaf beetle family are subdivisions, and this is more specifically a flea beetle. They are so named because they have broadened hind legs enabling them to jump well. The "miner" part of their name comes from the fact that their larvae feed by burrowing inside leaves, leaving little wiggly trails of destruction. Although bright red, they are only about 4mm long, so not easy to spot. This one was in the flower meadow by the car park.
