Mammals - The Roe Deer

First seen on Thursday 17th August 2017 at Croome

You are very unlikely to see deer on the main part of the estate at Croome. Quiet parts of the woods and surrounding farmland are more likely - although these are the first deer I have seen at Croome since I first visited in 2006. Deer will usually sense you before you see them, and move away. So when I saw these two young Roe Deer I don't know who was more surprised - them or me (I was looking for grasshoppers at the time). They were not far from the 'outer path' that runs north of the lake.

Roe deer are this beautiful rusty colour in the summer, and more dull-grey in the winter. Unlike some deer that live in herds, Roe Deer are more solitary, living in small groups, usually feeding on the edges of woods and on farmland.
