Waders - The Snipe

First seen on Thursday 7th February 2019 at Croome

The Snipe is a small wader, about the size of a blackbird. They are very difficult to see, as they spend much of their time in vegetation and reeds, and are very well camouflaged. You usually need to scan the reeds with a scope to spot them. They are not common at Croome, and you won't see them in the main central area of the park as they prefer the quieter areas away from the crowds. They are more visible when in flight as in these photos, when they are spooked and quickly fly to another area of the reeds.

Strictly speaking, this one should be called a Common Snipe as there is another Snipe found in the UK called a Jack Snipe. Jack Snipes are similar but are much smaller and have a shorter broader bill. They are much more rare than the Common Snipe so you're highly unlikely to see one at Croome.
