Hover-flies - Xylota Segnis

First seen on Thursday 10th September 2020 at Cragside

Xylota Segnis is quite a common hoverfly, around from April to November. When it's at rest it's not obvious what species it is, apart from its stripy legs. However when it flies you can see its flat black abdomen with a broad orange band. It is usually found on leaves rather than flowers, collecting pollen and honeydew.
