Flies - The Scorpion Fly

First seen on Wednesday 16th June 2021 at Druridge Pools

Scorpion flies look similar to lacewings, but they are a separate species. So named because the abdomen of the male is upturned like a scorpion (this one is a female). They also have a characteristic elongated head. They fly around in shady areas, and can be found on foliage such as brambles.

The Scorpion Fly below is a male, with the vicious looking upturned abdomen, which gives the species their common name.
