Ducks, Grebes and Coots - The Black-necked Grebe

First seen on Monday 13th February 2023 at Holy Island

The Black-necked Grebe is quite a rare bird to see in the UK, but this one was feeding near St Cuthbert's Island for a week or two. It is in winter plumage unfortunately. Its summer plumage is much more spectacular - very dark (mostly black) with a golden fan behind its bright red eyes. they are larger than the Little Grebe. One distinguishing feature is the bright red eyes.
