Butterflies - The Dark Green Fritillary

First seen on Wednesday 29th July 2020 at Holy Island

The Dark Green Fritillary is a large, brightly coloured butterfly, making it easy to spot. The Northumberland coast is a good place to see these butterflies. Male and female are very similar - the female is a paler orange, especially towards the edges. They tend to feed on the nectar of purple flowers such as thistles. They can be found in June to August. This one was hiding in the grasses in the Straight Lonnen and looks a bit worse for wear unfortunately.
