The Merlin is the UK's smallest falcon. Like the peregrine, merlins can be seen on the coast, preying on the tiny waders. This one looks like a juvenile, quite a dark brown, with heavy vertical streaking on its chest. It was flying north along the beach, not much higher than the waves. Unfortunately, it carried on north and didn't fly back for a better photo.
