Larks, Pipits and Wagtails - The Skylark

First seen on Wednesday 31st March 2021 at Druridge Pools

The skylark is one of those birds you will have heard, probably without realising it. The song of the skylark is a quintessentially summer sound. As their name suggests, skylarks sing while they fly. Their song is a continuous series of varying trills that carry a long way. They can usually be heard in the meadows and dunes along the coast. If you hear one close by, look into the sky, and if you find it, it will probably be a little dot high up, but with patience, you may see one flying closer - when they land they usually disappear quite quickly. Like a number of birds, they nest in the grass, so it's always best to stick to well worn paths. These photos were taken on the surrounding farmland, where they give better views in the shorter grass.

In the photo below, you can see its feathers raised to form the characteristic crest.
