Flies - The Cleg Fly

First seen on Wednesday 22nd June 2022 at Gibside

The Cleg Fly, or to give it its full name - the Notch-horned Cleg, is a member of the Horsefly family. Although interesting it's not a very pleasant insect as they can bite - definitely one to keep well away from. They are usually near livestock, but these were all over the meadows and woods this day - I was bitten a dozen times, and lucky not to get a reaction. On the plus side, they do have fascinating patterns on their wings, and colourful eyes - this one is a male, the females' eyes are bright green. It is the females that bite, which is why the ones I saw close up had green eyes!
