Finches and Buntings - The Siskin

First seen on Friday 11th February 2022 at Gibside

Siskins can occasionally found on some back-garden feeders, but are normally seen feeding in coniferous trees and more especially Alder trees. Siskins feed in a very distinctive way - they feed on the seeds from cone-like fruits and hang from the branches in an acrobatic way, often upside down, and quite close to each other. They have distinctive yellow plumage with black and white spotty stripes. Males are much brighter yellow that the females, and have a black head patch (this one is a female). There were small (but noisy) flock of these in the tall trees near the Octagon Pond.
