Ducks, Grebes and Coots - The Water Rail

First seen on Sunday 2nd August 2020 at Druridge Pools

The Water Rail is similar to a Moorhen, but they are much more reclusive and rarely appear in public. They tend to hide in vegetation near water, then shuttle out to forage, but are easily spooked and run for cover. This one was at Druridge Bay Pools, quite happily wandering around, but it was very distant, with nothing to disturb it. They are more often heard than seen - they make a squealing noise, likened to a little pig's squeal.
