As their name suggests, these are the most common dragonflies you will see at Croome, and you will find them just about anywhere, from July to October, a longer period than most. Common Darters are relatively small compared to the other species of dragonfly, not much bigger than a damselfly. The one below is the pale green coloured female, and was photographed in the reeds by the side of the river.

Common darters can often be found basking on paths, benches and frequently on the tops of bushes. This male was basking in the sun on a branch by the Island Pavilion. The male is more of an orange-red colour, not to be confused with the Ruddy Darter, which is a more pure red colour.
