Herons, Egrets, Cranes and Bitterns - The Grey Heron

First seen on Saturday 12th March 2016 at Croome

Although I've listed this bird as being by the lake and river, you will also see herons standing in, and flying over the meadows. The main lake is obviously the best place to see one though. There is a resident heron, which often stands at the edge of the large island in the centre. The one below was actually perched at the top of a large tree half way along the river. It may look odd seeing it in the branches, as we normally see them fishing at the side of water, but of course they roost and nest in trees.

A more normal view is that below, when you see herons flying with a slow graceful wing-beat low across the meadows.

In 2017 a pair raised a baby heron, and all three could be seen hunting along the river.
