Damselflies - The Large Red Damselfly

First seen on Sunday 21st May 2017 at Croome

There are only two red coloured damselflies in the UK, the large red and the small red. Small reds are all-over red, whereas the large red has bronze patches and black legs. The small red damselfly is scarce, and only found in southern England and west Wales. You are therefore only likely to see this Large Red Damselfly. They are quite widespread and can be found around the lakes, usually in the grass beside the water. They are early arrivals, around in June and July. Males are mostly red and bronze, with red shoulder stripes. Females are more stripy, with yellow highlighting the stripes, and they have yellow shoulder stripes.
