Damselflies - The Red-eyed Damselfly

First seen on Tuesday 28th June 2016 at Croome

Another well named damselfly, similar to a blue-tailed damselfly, the Red-eyed Damselfly has deep red eyes. They are often seen standing on pondweed and lily leaves, so the pond area to the south of the lake is a good place to look, as well as the far end of the Croome River. They are around in May to August. They emerge from their larval state in May.

The photograph below shows a female red-eyed damselfly. Her eyes are more brown than the deep red that males have. Although very similar to the imature form, this one has more colour in the eyes, blue tail markings and a yellow shoulder stripe.

The photo below shows a very young one (probably emerged that very day) in its teneral (soft) state, before it gets its final colouration.
