Waders - The Avocet

First seen on Sunday 19th July 2020 at Druridge Pools

The Avocet must be one of the UK's most recognisable waders, with its distinctive black and white markings and long upwards turning bill. These were on the pools at Druridge Bay. They feed in shallow water, sweeping with their bill from side to side (shown in final photo). They are a summer visitor and often breed in Northumberland. You can see the chicks in the second photo - they have upturned bills from a very early age.
