Divers - The Black-throated Diver

First seen on Friday 11th February 2022 at Druridge Pools

The Black-throated Diver is a rare visitor to Northumberland. This one spent many days on the at East Chevington, but on this day it was drifting much farther south towards Druridge Pools. In its winter uniform it is not so easy to distinguish from the other divers. Our most common diver, the Red-throated Diver has an upward pointing bill, but this one is horizontal and dagger shaped. It is slimmer than the Great Northern Diver, and has a white rear flash and another on its flank.
