Damselflies - The Blue-tailed Damselfly

First seen on Tuesday 14th July 2020 at Druridge Pools

The name perfectly describes this damselfly and makes them quite easy to spot, even in flight, as the bright blue dot on the end of the tail shows well in sunlight. They can be found near the Pools and in the dunes. They are around in May to August. The male is fairly consistent having all blue markings.

These are both females however and colours do vary a lot. the first one is the normal female colour, which is a green-blue. Females occur in five forms and colours can include pink, violet and olive green. Both sexes have distinct two-tone diamond wing spots. The one below shows an immature female. Clearly she has a blue tail, but the rest of her is pinky-orange. She is called a 'rufescens' colour form.
