Flies - The Caddis Fly

First seen on Wednesday 23rd June 2021 at Druridge Pools

The Caddis Fly is probably more famous in its larval stage, where it lives underwater and builds a case around itself for protection and camouflage. These cases are quite distinct for each species, some are made from sand grains, some from dead leaves, and some just random debris. Another way of distinguishing some species is the number of spurs on the legs.

This one is Mystacides longicornis and is one of the easier ones to identify due to its brown barred wing pattern, very long antennae and red eyes. Its larval case is usually made of sand grains.
