Beetles - The Cardinal Beetle

First seen on Wednesday 16th June 2021 at Druridge Pools

Named after the Catholic Cardinal's robe, Cardinal Beetles are bright red in colour. These beetles are quite common, and can be found in the meadows and bushes. Note that there are two species of cardinal beetle. One has a black head (pyrochroa coccinea). This one (pyrochroa serraticornis) has a red head. The red headed form is the most common one to see.

Both forms have comb-like antennae. There is similar beetle called the Lily Beetle, which can be mistaken for the Cardinal Beetle, but they have more plain antenna and are a more intense red.
