Larks, Pipits and Wagtails - The Channel Wagtail

First seen on Saturday 17th April 2021 at Druridge Pools

Yellow Wagtails come in a variety of flavours. The Channel Wagtail is essentially a Yellow Wagtail hybridised with a continental Blue-headed Wagtail (a separate race). It is easily distinguished from a Yellow Wagtail, as it has a grey/blue head, with a white eye stripe. This one was on the edge of the North Pool, but has been seen on the Budge Fields and in the surrounding farmland. Like many wagtails, they like being near livestock, as this attracts the insects for them to feed on.
