The Great Northern Diver is one of the largest divers we get in the UK (only the White-billed Diver is slightly larger). It is a spectacular bird in the summer, with a jet black head and bill, with vivid black and white stripes and dots in very regular patterns on its body. Sadly, in its winter uniform (here) it is a more drab, conventionally coloured water bird. This one has a pale bill, so is probably a 1st-winter Juvenile. They are a winter visitor, and although normally found on the sea, this one was fishing on the North Pool at Druridge.
