Fulmar, Gannet, Petrels and Shearwaters - The Gannet

First seen on Tuesday 14th July 2020 at Druridge Pools

The Gannet is one of our largest seabirds, and they nest in large colonies. They are white, with large black wingtips. They actually start life dark all-over and gradually swap dark feathers for white. Gannets are spectacular divers. they fold their wings back and enter the water at high speed, travelling underwater for while, chasing the fish.

These aren't great photos, as Gannets are normally seen far out at sea. These were seen at Druridge bay - if you look from the beach, there are often flocks out at sea either flying, diving or as in the first photo sat around with other sea birds.

This very young Gannet is all-over dark brown. It has probably fledged this year.
