Finches and Buntings - The Goldfinch

First seen on Thursday 20th August 2020 at Druridge Pools

The Goldfinch is commonly found at the Dunes and hedgerows of the North-east coast feeding on seeds at the top of the trees. They fly from tree to tree in flocks, with a 'bouncy' flight. They usually sing with soft, bubbly, tinkling trills. However, when they are feeding they can get quite possessive and argue with harsh rasping noises. In the late summer, flocks of Goldfinches feed on the fluffy seed heads of the thistles. They are easily recognised by their bright red face. However, when they are very young they have plain grey face, as in the second photo (to the right of a Linnet). Note the Goldfinch has a bigger and sharper beak than the Linnet.
