Butterflies - The Green-veined White

First seen on Sunday 2nd August 2020 at Druridge Pools

The Green-veined White Butterfly is one of several 'white' butterflies and are quite common in the meadows, hedgerows and dunes. Although you can see veins in the wings, it is the underside pattern that gives this butterfly its name. If you look at the photograph you can see the green shaded veins underneath are actually black on very pale yellow. The female has more black markings than the male, and the second brood of the year also has more black again.


 

The photo below shows the male, with dark wingtips and a single small dot on each wing. below that is the female - several large spots and extensive dark lines and shading.
