You can see herons in a wide variety of environments. Traditionally, they are seen standing near the shore of a lake or river, fishing. You will also see herons standing in, and flying over meadows. You can see them perched in treetops, which although looks a little odd they do roost and nest in trees. Finally, they are commonly seen on the sea shore. They stand perfectly motionless, waiting for a fish (or some other tasty morsel) to pass by. Then they will strike very quickly, with their long beak.
