Flies - The Hawthorn Fly

First seen on Friday 14th May 2021 at Druridge Pools

The Hawthorn Fly is also known as St Mark's fly as it emerges around the time of St Mark's Day (on April 25th). I saw this one (with many others) in mid may, but it was a particularly cold spring, so they were probably late that year. They are the annoying flies the hover in swarms with their long back legs dangling down. They are well known for not getting out of the way when you walk into them!
