Herons, Egrets, Cranes and Bitterns - The Little Egret

First seen on Sunday 26th July 2020 at Druridge Pools

Once very rare in the UK, the Little Egret is now relatively common and can be seen in good numbers in the south of the country. Despite the name, they are not a small bird - with a wingspan of around a metre. This one was at Druridge Bay, obviously just flying over, but they do feed and roost in the nearby pools. They feed in shallow waters, sometimes finding their prey by stirring up the water with their feet. They roost and build their nests in trees.
