Gulls - The Mediterranean Gull

First seen on Sunday 17th April 2022 at Druridge Pools

At first glance you might think this is just another black-headed gull, which are quite common in the north-east. However, this is the much less common Mediterranean Gull. The most obvious difference is the size of the black on its head. Black-headed gulls are mainly black over the face and part of the neck, whereas Mediterranean Gulls have black much further down their neck. The black tends to be a deep pure black rather than dark brown on the black-headed gulls. Their wings are all-over white with no dark tips. Their eyes have a white surround and they have bright red legs, and a bright red bill with a yellow tip. You can clearly see the difference with the Black-headed Gull in the foreground.
