Moths - The Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet Moth

First seen on Thursday 9th July 2020 at Druridge Pools

There are around eight moths that have a similar appearance of dark wings with red spots. The two most common have either six or five spots on each wing, so are easy to distinguish. However, the five spot family has two variations. This Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet Moth is the more common of the two, has five distinct spots, and fairly narrow, pointed wings. The other is the more simpler named Five-spot Burnet Moth. The 'narrow border' actually refers the the border on the hind wing. These Moths have a very rapid wing beat, hovering over the flowers on the dunes, and are quite easy to spot.
