Ducks, Grebes and Coots - The Pintail

First seen on Saturday 28th November 2020 at Druridge Pools

The Pintail is a very elegant duck with very striking markings - a chocolate brown head with white stripe on the side. The one below is just coming out of its summer plumage, so not quite as neat and tidy as it should be, and the tail is rather short. The Pintail is a surface feeding duck (dabbling duck). Not very common at Druridge, these are just occasional visitors.

The one below was seen in the spring, and is in his breeding plumage. Much more dapper than the first photo, and he now has his very long pointed tail feathers which they are named after.

The group below were briefly on the budge fields early one morning - three females and one male. Their necks look a little elongated as they were very alert, looking around and a few seconds later took flight.
