Moths - The Red Underwing Moth

First seen on Sunday 5th September 2021 at Druridge Pools

The Red Underwing Moth is a vey large moth, even larger than a butterfly, so it is very noticeable when in flight. This one was flying along the roadside at Druridge, and in flight you can clearly see the bright red underwings set against the grey upper wings - quite unique. Unfortunately, each time it landed it quickly tucked away its red underwings and blended into the background. in the photo below you can just see a small splash of red that it didn't quite hide away. Their caterpillars feed on poplars and willows. They normally fly at night, but can be disturbed and will fly during the day.
