The Robber Fly looks quite threatening, and it is. It has a short strong proboscis which they use to stab their prey and then they inject their victim with a neurotoxin that paralyses them, ready to suck the like out of them. There are around 29 species of Robber Fly (Asilidae).

It is not so obvious from the first photo, but this one has milky white patches on the wing base (only in males), plus orange and black legs, so it it most likely Pamponerus germanicus. This species is mainly coastal.
