Mammals - The Roe Deer

First seen on Saturday 5th September 2020 at Druridge Pools

Roe deer are this beautiful rusty colour in the summer, and more dull-grey in the winter (both colours are shown here). Unlike some deer that live in herds, Roe Deer are more solitary, living in small groups, usually feeding on the edges of woods and on farmland. Most sightings will be on the Budge Fields at Druridge, but occasionally you can see them in the shelter belt trees, from the road. You can identify deer from the shape of the rump patch. Roe Deer have a broad white rump patch. Another way is their nose and mouth - they have black nose and mouth, with a contrasting white chin.
