Butterflies - The Small Copper

First seen on Tuesday 11th August 2020 at Druridge Pools

Not as common as many butterflies, the Small Copper can be identified by its vivid orange colouration, and it is quite small, similar in size to the blue butterflies. They can be seen mid to late summer, in the meadows and dunes near the coast - these were at Druridge Bay.

Interestingly, the small copper has one drab underwing and one pretty one, as you can just see from the photo below. Male and female are very similar. The male is smaller and has more pointed wings. Small Coppers do also have colour variations, including this one which has little blue spots on the lower wings.
