Butterflies - The Wall Brown

First seen on Wednesday 5th August 2020 at Druridge Pools

The Wall Brown is more often known simply as a Wall butterfly. Although widely distributed, it is more often found in coastal areas. it is by far the prettiest of the brown butterflies, with its intricate patterns of patches and spots. It is also quite bright in flight, so easy to spot. They fly in June-July, but can have a second brood in Aug-Sept. The males (two below) have a broad dark band across the forewing.

The females are lighter and larger than the male, and lack the darks band on the forewing. The two photos below are of a female. These were all found in the hedgerow at Druridge Bay.
